shoma

Jawaahir Dance Company presents Shoma, a dance theater extravaganza set during a bridal henna party in Saudi Arabia. Shoma, an honored Bedouin storyteller, entertains the guests with a folktale about Muna, an independent shepherdess who is lost in a sandstorm, awakening in a magic garden of dancing birds, palm trees, and other fantastic creations. Like all good storytellers, Shoma tailors the tale to fit the occasion – in this case, the bride’s culturally sensitive reputation is being threatened with public scrutiny. Written by esteemed Arabian dance specialist, Kay Hardy Campbell, Shoma includes Saudi and Gulf folk and social dances, as well as imaginative contemporary choreographies and performances by Cassandra Shore, bringing our tale of love and marriage to life.

This production is an updated version of the company’s highly-successful run of Shoma in 1998 that inspired a generation of dancers in the Twin Cities. Many of the original dances are being restaged
and reimagined. An all-star musical ensemble led by Georges Lammam and includes, Jim Grippo, Michael Ibrahim, Miles Jay, Naser Musa, Susu Pampinin, and local musicians Tim O'Keefe, Laura Harada, and Yaron Klein will dazzle your ears with live music. Playwright and Saudi women’s music and dance scholar Kay Hardy Campbell has revised the script to include contemporary challenges, such as the pros and cons that social media provides the current generation of young Saudi women. The main male lead is played by Egyptian music, dance, and theater artist, Karim Nagi, and Don LaCourse, Ethnic Dance Theater’s director, is playing a featured role.

Plan on joining us for this extraordinary show as we enter our second year at The Lab Theater!

Jawaahir Dance Company is pleased to announce that we have received an MRAC Arts Learning Grant to be used to bring two guest choreographers to set new pieces on the Company.

The first of these choreographers is the esteemed Arabian dance specialist Kay Hardy Campbell. Ms. Campbell will set a theatricalized social dance from Saudi Arabia on the Company, specifically for our upcoming concert Shoma, to be presented at the Lab Theater, September 29thOctober 2nd. Join us to watch Jawaahir rehearse Kay's beautiful choreography! Kay will take a few questions and discuss her process following the rehearsal.

Writer, musician, and dance instructor Kay Hardy Campbell has been teaching Khaliji folkloric music and dance for over three decades. After earning a BA in Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Minnesota, she lived in Saudi Arabia for several years, learning the dances at women's wedding parties and in the homes of Saudi friends. Kay has written extensively about the music and dance of the Arabian Peninsula, beginning as a feature writer for the English language 'Arab News' in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and continues to write for 'Aramco World Magazine.' Her ability to read, speak, and write Arabic has allowed her to uncover and convey many aspects of culture and traditional life little known outside the Gulf. Though she does not perform as a soloist, Kay choreographs Khaliji dances for her students and dance troupes. She teaches regularly at the Karim Nagi's Arab Dance Seminar. Her fund of knowledge includes not only women's dances, but also bedouin folk dances. She has lectured and taught dance at colleges and universities around the country. Working from her home in Maine, her personal projects include a blog on women's issues in Saudi Arabia and a novel that inspired the script of Shoma.

An informal Meet The Artist Q-and-A session with Ms. Campbell
Saturday, August 27th
5:30pm
Sebastian Joe's
1007 Franklin Ave S, Minneapolis

For more in-dept discussion of Kay and her work in Arab music and dance, please attend the Meet The Artist event at Sebastian Joe's on August 27th.

No registration is necessary for the open rehearsal or the meet and greet. Just come!

Need a cool place to hang out on a hot Friday night? Come on over to watch The Fez Documentary!

"The Fez Supperclub, the first of its kind, opened in Hollywood in 1959. It became a center for the Arabic community in Southern California as well as a catalyst for Arab music and dance on the West Coast. The Fez went on to inspire generations of musicians and dancers well beyond Los Angeles. Featuring live Arabic music, Belly Dancers, and the best Arabic food in town, The Fez became legend!

Director-Producer Roxxanne Shelaby brings us into the heart of her father's club, The Fez. She has collected the stories heard all her life from dancers, musicians and patrons. They share their experiences of the magical nights at The Fez where Hollywood celebrities were regulars, Americans were introduced to and fell in love with Arabic culture, and a Belly Dance scene was born."

Review of a previous Class Showings

"The class showing was SPECTACULAR!
Even people who were shy in class were thrilled to be performing and had great energy during the show. Students were excited to show what they knew. There was even one class that had only one student performing, but she went on accompanied by her teacher and did a great job!
The students who watched the upper levels perform were excited and inspired to see what else they could learn. The audience clapped along and supported the performers with great energy, and students were thrilled to see their teachers dance."
