Cassandra and Oasis Dance Camp return to Morocco for a unique and exciting Middle Eastern dance experience in one of the most beautiful locations in the world. Camp Marrakech takes place at the Al Jazira Riad. Located in the heart of the medina, a ten minute walk from D’jemma El Fna, Al Jazira Riad is our own private guest house. Simply and elegantly furnished in Moroccan style, with reception rooms, roof terrace, swimming pool and private hammam, the riad is ours to dance and play and be entertained in for a week.

Camp is five days of classes in traditional folk styles of Middle Eastern women's dances taught by Cassandra, accompanied by percussionist Nicole LeCorgne. Dance class is held in the open-air courtyard of the Riad, with breaks for traditional Moroccan mint tea.

Cassandra will be teaching at this year's Arab Dance Seminar with Kay Hardy Campbell, Karim Nagi, Amel Tafsout, Rachid Halihal, and Meiver De La Cruz. This intensive weekend of workshops, lectures, performances and dance parties will give the student a comprehensive Arab cultural dance experience. This Seminar puts all the dance skills, techniques and practices back into their cultural contexts. The Arab world is home to over 20 countries and is the origin and breeding ground for multiple dance styles and practices with a common language and aesthetic. This seminar helps clarify and illuminate that tradition.

This Seminar is created for people with a minimum of 2 years dance experience. The faculty seeks to give every student the authentic techniques, choreographies, and comprehension, of Arab dance. Every dancer will take every workshop and lecture and the music classes will be taught using generic language that is understandable to non-musicians. The student will be provided with study sheets and recordings that reflect the curriculum. Every dancer will leave the Seminar with new routines to perform and teach, plus a responsible cultural understanding of the dance and music.

She taught at the Arab Dance Seminar in Boston this weekend, and her
classes were very good (and lots of fun), but her performance just blew
us away.

Absolutely everything she did was the exact perfect thing: exactly what
it took to help you hear the music through her ears and feel exactly
what she was feeling, without the slightest bit of "extra" to distract
you from it.

I think her taqsim was one of the simplest I've ever seen, in the most
wonderful way. It was like a Japanese flower arrangement: what she could
do with just a few movements was more eloquent than what another dancer
could do with many.

There was no hint of "look at me!" or "be impressed by all the things
I'm layering!" in her performance. What she did took incredible
precision and control, but you didn't realize it until afterward. While
you were watching, all that you really noticed was how *exquisite* every
moment was and how privileged you felt to be there.

How has MTV and YouTube influenced the Arab world? More than you know! Join Cassandra and Jawaahir Dance Company for an ecstatic, eclectic, energizing, and enlightening evening of contemporary dances from the Arabic-speaking world. With the lush sounds of the all-women al Hareem Orchestra, Cassandra will explore the enchanting energies of the usually unseen: a night in the women’s quarters. World-class musicians will join us for this exploration of the hidden treasures of dance and music that lie behind the masharabiyya – the screens that isolate the women’s quarters.

Women of the Arab Gulf countries dance together at women-only parties to celebrate weddings, engagements, graduations, and other happy occasions. Dance styles vary throughout the Gulf region, and a pan-regional party dance style is found in most cities and towns. Gulf dance movements highlight the upper body, since unlike Oriental Dance, the hips are not bound. Hips move, but they are subtle and hidden. A regional signature move is the tossing of one’s hair from side to side, up and down, or in a figure-eight pattern. For formal occasions, women sometimes don a large embroidered overdress, known as thobe nashaal, over their party clothes. Fashion-conscious young women today might prefer to dance without the thobe. In an evening where only women are present, such as a private party of music and dance held in someone’s home, time passes luxuriously, with conversation, sipping tea, and eating sweets. When the music’s rhythm is slow, the dance is sedate and low-key. But when the tempo picks up, high-spirited women take to the dance floor, and the mood becomes ecstatic. The sounds of zaghareed (ululations), laughter, clapping, and whistling will fill the air.

Stage design by Hend al-Mansour and new choreographies by Cassandra for Jawaahir Dance Company complete this energetic expedition. The experience will be enriched by the unique lighting design of Jeff Bartlett, Artistic Director of the Southern Theater.

Susu Pampanin is well known for her virtuosity in Arabic drumming and is one of the few female Middle Eastern drummers highly respected by the Arabic professional music community. She grew up hearing Arabic music – her mother is Amina Goodyear of San Francisco, a longtime teacher and performer of Middle Eastern music. Susu has worked and recorded with fusion ensembles, including Wild Mango, Keith Terry and Crosspulse, Stellamara, Jazayer, Blue Nile, Vince Delgado Quintet, Susu and the Cairo Cats. Her CDs include Susu and the Cairo Cats and Hands of Time. Bring a drum. Open to all levels of skill.

Kay Hardy Campbell lives near Boston, where she plays the `ud and teaches the women’s dances of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf (the Khaleej). She lived in Saudi Arabia for eight years studying the dances and music of the Gulf region. She took the opportunity to be invited to women’s gatherings and participate in their dance and music. In 1997, she co-founded the Arabic Music Retreat and serves as Administrative Director. Kay currently writes on Gulf women’s dance and music for Saudi Aramco World.
