Imagine the embrace of lush sounds and exotic dances of the long, warm North African nights...and come experience Arabian Bouquet. Inspired by the lyrical love songs of Warda, “The Algerian Rose,” legendary star of film and stage, virtuoso vocalist Mayssa Karaa joins the incomparable Georges Lammam Ensemble, weaving their magical sounds around the unparalleled artistry of Jawaahir Dance Company. From the softly inviting Andalus to the passionate spectacle of Ya Leil (Oh Night!), Arabian Bouquet transports you to a world of moving mosaics, shimmering silks, haunting sounds... and astonishingly beautiful performances that will call your heart long after the lights come up and the curtain closes.

Under the artistic genius of dancer/choreographer Cassandra Shore, Jawaahir Dance Company is known for movement – color – spectacle – excitement – passion – and exceptional technical accomplishment clothed in satin, sequins, and astounding artistry. Jawaahir translates the rich dance traditions of the Arabic-speaking Middle East into dance-theater extravaganzas you won’t see anywhere else.

Immersed in tradition, every Jawaahir performance is an experience in living history — traditional dances set alongside new choreography that honors the ancient and celebrates the present day — music rooted in sounds as old as time itself, fine-tuned by artists who hear the “now” and bend it back to greet the ancestors. Dance balanced on music — music loving the dance — Arabian Bouquet is one show not to be missed!

Inspiration and Guest Artists for Arabian Bouquet:
Arabian Bouquet is inspired by the work of Warda, “The Algerian Rose.” Warda was one of the most famous and revered artists across the Middle East, known for her lyrical love songs and her long, starring career in film. Born in Paris of Lebanese and Algerian parents, she performed songs composed especially for her by some of the greatest pan-Arabic composers, and was honored by Egypt’s President Nasser and other national leaders. Upon her passing in 2012, she was given a state funeral in Algeria, and buried among national heroes.

Now, in Arabian Bouquet, Lebanese virtuoso Mayssa Karaa brings Warda’s passionate sounds back to life. Mayssa was raised in Beirut, Lebanon and started her musical education at the Lebanese National Conservatory. Singing in five different languages, her repertoire spans from classical through modern music. In March 2012, she accompanied renowned violin and oud master Simon Shaheen during his tour to Utah and performed traditional Arabic songs and mouwashahat (Arabic poetic forms). Her music preserves cultural heritage and brings amazing sounds to contemporary audiences.

Twin Cities audiences flock to Jawaahir concerts for exceptional dance, and for the incomparable sounds of The Georges Lammam Ensemble. Born in Beirut, Georges Lammam’s solo violin exemplifies Arabic improvisation and lyricism. In addition to Mayssa Karaa, Georges' 11-piece Ensemble features special guest performer Karim Nagi (rockin' riq) along with Naser Musa (oud, vocals), Miles Jay (bass), Ali Amr (qanun), Susu Pampanin (tabla, percussion), Khader Keileh (keyboard), violinists Laura Harada and Salah Fattah, and the multi-talented Tim O'Keefe (percussion). The California-based members of the Ensemble tour throughout the US and have been presented in venues ranging from the San Francisco World Music Festival to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Workshops with KARIM NAGI

Sagat (Zill finger cymbals)
Saturday, November 16. 1:00-3:00pm.

Karim has developed a comprehensive zill method that utilizes drum techniques, and an ambidextrous approach. He uses the Egyptian Sufi Zikr aesthetic with multiple sounds, open and closed, sizzle and rapid combinations. Students learn the Arabic rhythms by name and how to play them while dancing! Dancers learn to use the cymbals to communicate rhythms to a band and accent solo dancing and body movements. Dancers and percussionists of all levels are welcome. He also teaches dance combinations and solo patterns, trains the dancer in musicality, and teaches when and when-not to play within an Arabic song. Karim promises to transform dancers into musicians with his finger cymbal teaching approach.

Musicality for Dancers
Sunday, November 24. 1:00-3:00pm.

Despite any mastery of technique and bodily dexterity, true dance expression requires musicality. The best dancers are those who emulate the music into their own movement. Karim demystifies Arab music for the dancer. Several recurring themes in Arab music are identified (using recorded examples) and explained in emotive, non-musical terms. The class covers taksim, melodic themes, vocal vs. instrumental songs, rhythms & rhythmic changes, melodic modulation, song structure, orchestration and instrumentation. Karim guides you through several songs and leads you in dancing to each of these themes. This is a movement class that helps you become the physical personification of the music.

Susu Pampanin
Susu Pampanin

Workshop with SUSU PAMPANIN

Intermediate Arabic Tabla
Saturday, November 23. 1:00-3:00pm.

Susu Pampanin teaches a workshop for drummers with previous training. All levels are welcome to attend, but class will be taught at the intermediate level. Class begins with a warm-up followed by a basic technique and rhythm review. (Come with your rhythm requests.) We will also focus on important sounds such as slaps, pops, and finger rolls. Class includes drills for short rolls and long roll development. We will break down and learn to play a short drum solo.

Naser Musa
Naser Musa

Workshop with NASER MUSA

Understanding Arabic Music: Useful words in song poetry
Sunday, November 17. 1:00-3:00pm.

Naser Musa's "Arabic Words for Dancers and Musicians" is a workshop on useful Arabic words that help dancers and musicians gain greater insight into the lyrics and intended mood of a piece of music. Naser discusses the meaning and origin of certain vocabulary, and demonstrates how the words work together with music by playing the oud and singing for workshop participants.

Cassandra is teaching and performing at the Arab Dance Seminar
Las Vegas, NV
Hosted by Karim Nagi

November 1-3, 2013

The goal of this intensive weekend of workshops, lectures, performances, and dance parties is to give the student a comprehensive Arab cultural dance experience. Going beyond nebulous "Bellydance" or generic "Middle Eastern" categories, the Seminar puts all the skills, techniques, and practices back into their cultural contexts. The Arab world is the origin and breeding ground for multiple styles and practices with a common language and aesthetic. This Seminar helps clarify and illuminate that tradition.

The 10th Arab Dance Seminar is 20 hours of dance classes and lectures and a live performance. This year they're focusing on Storytelling and Theater with Cassandra, Amel Tafsout, Kay Hardy Campbell, and of course, Karim Nagi.

This seminar is sold out.

Review of a previous Class Showings

"The class showing was SPECTACULAR!
Even people who were shy in class were thrilled to be performing and had great energy during the show. Students were excited to show what they knew. There was even one class that had only one student performing, but she went on accompanied by her teacher and did a great job!
The students who watched the upper levels perform were excited and inspired to see what else they could learn. The audience clapped along and supported the performers with great energy, and students were thrilled to see their teachers dance."

Cassandra Performing in "Love Stories"
in the Rabbit Show hosted by John Munger

February 6, 2013. 7:00pm.
Bryant Lake Bowl Accessibility symbol.

Cassandra and six other choreographers will present “Love Stories,” a one-hour showcase. The other performers are: Kenna Cottman of Voice of Culture, Maria Fontana, Shana Hoglund of Innovative Productions, Pat McManus (with Gerry Timm), Corey Mills of SPARK Theater, and Suchi Saram.

What is love? The great American poet, Robert Frost, said that “Love is the irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired.” French author Jules Renard said that “Love is like an hourglass, with the heart filling up as the brain empties.” But you may have your own opinion and experience.

Affordable at $7 - $12 sliding as able, with $1 discount if you wear a Fringe button. Tickets are available on-line now.

Something Tribal This Way Comes
Featuring Wendy Allen of FCBD®
Hosted by Kamala Chaand Dance Co, Bohemian Underground Workshop, and Luna Rouge

February 1-3, 2013
Old Arizona
2821 Nicollet Ave Minneapolis, MN 55408
(Note: The location has changed from St. Paul to Minneapols.)

Cassandra is performing in the show Friday evening, and also teaching:

1. Belly Dance History 101: Dance history, and famous dancers of the past and present (and what sets them apart). Aided by Cassandra’s exclusive collection of videos and DVDs from around the world.

2. Rhythm Workshop: What do we love to dance to? DRUMMING! Nothing adds to a dancer's performing expertise and ability to affect her audience like deep body knowledge of the common dance rhythms. We'll drum and dance and work on how our steps fit the delicious rhythms! Bring percussion instruments, if possible (finger cymbals are percussion!).

3. Ghawazee Style: Dance of the Southern Egyptian Gypsies: Ghawazee are earthy, lively public performers, banned to the south of Egypt in the 1850’s, they are the link to the Egyptian historical style. Known for their rapid hip movements, finger cymbal playing, and showmanship! Bring finger cymbals.

4. Finger Cymbal Boogie! Learn some of the most fantastic and challenging cymbal patterns, passed on to Cassandra directly from Jamila Salimpour and Aida al-Adawi. Learn the techniques and patterns with syncopated accents.

From Teri K about the 2013 Henna Party: Thank you all for the wonderful party yesterday - it really turned a cold afternoon into a warm one!!! I loved the "hello" dance, and dancing with the big sparkly veil-dresses! The dance performances were beautiful, amazing, inspiring, and fun!! The veil fans were just as good as fireworks to me! The music was great; the colorful rugs were cool (I wish now I had taken pictures of that floor!); the henna was a hoot; and the food was FABULOUS too! Thank you all for your generosity. I know it's a lot of work to cut a big bowl of cherry tomatoes for salad (yum!). And wow - who put the butter in those 7-layer bars?! Delicious!
Thank You! It was Fun Visiting with People Too!
