Jawaahir Auditions

Monday, December 21
6:00 – 8:00pm
Tuesday, December 22
8:00 – 10:00pm

Jawaahir Studio
3010 Minnehaha Avenue, Minneapolis

Contact: Cassandra Shore by email cassandra@jawaahir.org or phone 612-872-6050 to schedule your slot. If you are unable to audition on these dates, and are still interested, call Cassandra.

Audition Procedure
Dancers are asked to prepare a short (less than 5 minutes) solo in any style to be performed in a closed audition setting, and remain dressed for movement to participate in learning and dancing choreography segments in a group setting. Costumes not necessary unless you feel it's intrinsic to your performance.

Commitment
We rehearse every Tuesday from 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM at our 3010 Minnehaha Ave studio in Minneapolis. There is a parking lot on each side of the studio and the entrance door is off the south lot. Some extra rehearsals are scheduled throughout the season as are small group rehearsals.

All members and apprentices are required to attend four hours of dance class per week outside of their rehearsal commitment time, in order to achieve healthy working dance competence. Classes at The Cassandra School will be gratis, and dancers are encouraged to study in other forms as well. We ask that you miss no rehearsals during the month prior to a concert.

All members are asked to participate in volunteer and fundraising activities as able. Our fundraising activities include silent and live auctions and other activities for our Henna Party and Annual Gala Fundraiser. Volunteer activities include: weekly rehearsal and event set-up and take-down, some board committees, costume care, hospitality, etc. We fully honor and recognize all contributions, including money and time.

Jawaahir Dance Company ignites the stage with “Sing To Me A Little,” an extravaganza of Arab dance, music, and talent that only Jawaahir can deliver. Jawaahir’s 19 dancers perform ancient traditions and stunning contemporary interpretations, collaborating with some of the most acclaimed Arab artists working today: world-class choreographers Sahra Saeeda and Yasmina Ramzy, commissioned by Jawaahir to each create new work for this concert, and multi-instrumentalist Michael Ibrahim, Director of the National Arab Orchestra, coming fresh from a recent Prairie Home Companion appearance. Long-time collaborator and violin virtuoso Georges Lammam returns as Musical Director. All of this – along with new choreography and breathtaking solo performance by Jawaahir Artistic Director Cassandra Shore.

Twin Cities audiences flock to Jawaahir concerts for exceptional dance, and for the incomparable sounds of The Georges Lammam Ensemble. Born in Beirut, Georges Lammam’s solo violin exemplifies Arabic improvisation and lyricism. Georges' 9-piece Ensemble features Michael Ibrahim (multi-instrumentalist), Shelley Thomas (vocalist), Susu Pampanin (tabla, percussion), Khader Keileh (keyboard), Khaled Khalifa (cello), violinists Laura Harada and Salah Fattah, and the multi-talented Tim O'Keefe (percussion). The California-based members of the Ensemble tour throughout the US and have been presented in venues ranging from the San Francisco World Music Festival to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

VIDEOS: Watch us rehearse! and Listen to Shelley sing!

*Cassandra says, "There is a famous song by Oum Kalsoum; in Arabic its title is Ghanilli Schwey Schwey, which translates more or less to sing to me a little. It's a charming song, asking her sweetheart to serenade her, and VERY well known in Arab music circles."

* Identify and sing 7 major Arabic maqam scales, along with famous song examples
* Clap and voice 10 major Arabic Iqaat rhythms, along with famous step examples
* Major music terms, in Arabic and English, that are relevant to a dance performance
* Cultural and linguistic references related to each melody and rhythm, promoting accuracy
* Movements and traditional combination steps that help communicate each musical topic
* Basics of reading sheet music, to help understand melody and rhythm accurately
Also receive a document of all rhythms, scales, terms, and famous Arabic words for your reference.

Dabke (Arabic line dancing): Literally meaning "Stomp" in Arabic, Dabke is a group dance found in the Eastern Arab countries. Performed mostly as a unisex line dance, Dabke is avidly done at the weddings and parties of Lebanese, Syrian, Jordanian, and Palestinian communities. The movements include rhythmic stomping, kicking, sideward walking, hopping, and jumping. In social settings the dancers hold hands and form long moving lines or wide rotating circles. You may find Dabke used as a form of non-violent social protest during war and conflicts, but it is primarily a proud and energetic group line dance enjoyed by all ages and both genders.

Karim Nagi is a native Egyptian drummer, DJ, composer, and folk dancer. He is the creator of Turbo Tabla, and has released four internationally distributed CDs of this unique brand of Arab House / Electronica using acoustic instruments. Karim has authored instructional DVDs for the Tabla / Doumbek, riqq tambourine, maqam & taqsim, Drum Solo for Dance, and Arab Folk Dance. He is well versed in the ultra-traditional styles of music, and has lead the Sharq Arabic Music Ensemble since 1999. He promotes and fosters the study of Arab dance in the USA as the director of the Arab Dance Seminar. Karim performs and teaches Tahteeb Cane Dance, Dabke Line Dance, and Zikr Sufi Dance.

Review of a previous Class Showings

"The class showing was SPECTACULAR!
Even people who were shy in class were thrilled to be performing and had great energy during the show. Students were excited to show what they knew. There was even one class that had only one student performing, but she went on accompanied by her teacher and did a great job!
The students who watched the upper levels perform were excited and inspired to see what else they could learn. The audience clapped along and supported the performers with great energy, and students were thrilled to see their teachers dance."
